Environment development

The environment for this project is broken into two areas consisting of both the inside and outside of a Laundromat. It situated within an imaginary universe which enables more freedom in regards to design. Reference has been pulled from various images of laundromats from all over the world. I firstly began collecting actual photographs of laundromats such as the examples below.

Laundromat exterior:

I then looked at a number of various line drawings of laundromats since this was our intended aesthetic.

From this point i began conceptualising a 3D model of the environment.

I then researched the use of edge detection shaders to achieve the line drawing aesthetic. These test renders below also have a flat solid white colour and while it is effective it also negates any effects of lighting and shadow which may not be desirable for the final output.

The below test render previews the look of a simple light based two tone shader. The lighting and shadows add a lot of character but also begin to pull the scene into a more 3D look which is undesirable in this case, especially considering the characters are to be flat 2D shapes.

A possible solution could be to flatten the 3D objects. This way we keep the 2D feel without compromising the lighting. The below test render is an example of this, i also tested a basic texture to add a paper cut-out look which may or may not be desirable.

I will say that even if we do head in the aesthetic direction as the above image, the 3D creation has not been a waste of time. The 3D models will help with placement and are also required to see the edge detection shader. This means i do not have to spend time on hand drawing the environmental details.
