Research Into Facial expression (Character)

Introduction

Facial expression is important element for this project. This is because there will be no verbal expression which means the action and emotion of the character will lead the story line.

Facial expressions

The importance of facial expression was described by Rosenberg who conducted a study on facial expression. In 2011, he said “Facial expressions change the meaning of adjectives (e.g., color intensity or distance magnitude) or convey adverbial information (e.g., carelessly or with relaxed enjoyment). The head/face indicates important grammar information about phrases”

Inspired animation for the characters

This is an animation made by Disney in 1930. The salient feature of this animation is there are no verbal expressions but they relies on movements which means you can read out their emotion through their movement.

But, for our project, I would like to give more focus on facial expression. This is because we’re not professional animator so it might be difficult to create a fluent movement of body and face is the most salient thing of human character.

Inspired drawing for the Characters

These are examples that can be adopted for our project. you can see the different composition of eye, nose and mouth gives you an idea of their emotion.

The role of mouth in our project
